I installed Lockdown but I only get a server error

If you installed Lockdown but now you get a 'server error' when you visit the Lockdown page it means something in the Lockdown config is wrong.

  1. If you used the 'automatic' method of lockdown where you visited the lockdown page and it said 'should be locked down' and you get the error the web host has configured their server in a way that Lockdown doesn't understand. Lockdown is pretty smart but it's not perfect and there are (sadly) web hosts who are set up in a way that makes it impossible for Lockdown to auto configure. In this case your only real option is to contact the web host and ask them to look at the '.htaccess' file in the lockdown folder and tell you what is wrong. Once you have this information you can contact loghound support and we'll help you with the rest.

  2. If you used the 'manual' method where you have to copy over the .htaccess file there is a good chance you copied the path over. Create a brand new lockdown page and try it again -- If it works the second time it means you had a problem with how you copied over the .htaccess file and you'll need to delete it and start again.

  3. Make sure that that in the lockdown plugin settings the 'Use Alternate File Path Method' checkbox is turned off -- it should be by default by turning that on in many hosts will cause this error (It fixes a problem for a very small number of people but for most people can cause a problem)

Finally -- always make sure you have the most recent version of the plugin -- You can get the most recent version here: http://loghound.com/lockdown/changelog/
