How do I get lockdown to work on fasthosts.co.uk?

Most web hosts work just fine out of the gate but there are very few that have odd requirements. Unfortunatley 'fastshosts' a UK based web host is one of the ones that is odd (and it is also, sadly a very large web host)

To get passwords working on fast hosts you have to do the following.

  1. Publish your lockdown page, make sure you have a user called 'admin' with password 'admin' -- When you visit it you will get an error (you may have to refresh to get the error)
  2. Go to the fasthosts 'web control panel' and select your domain -- On the left hand side under 'website options' is one labeled 'password protection'
  3. Enable the lockdown folder for passwords and add one user (you should use admin/admin for username/password) -- This is the trickiest part as you need to enter the same folder name as where your lockdown folder is.
  4. Now re-login into the lockdown page -- if asked for a password use the one you entered in step 3 above.
  5. It should now be working -- Remove admin/admin from the lockdown page and add your real users -- At this point you should (!) never haves to go back to the control panel and should be able to add/delete users as you like.

You have to go through these hoops as you have to tell fasthosts that this folder is "OK" to protect -- once you bless it via the fasthosts control panel lockdown can do the rest.
